Understanding Trademark & Copyright Symbols

The four main legal brand symbols — ™, ®, ©, ℠ — are used to establish and communicate intellectual property claims on trademarks, brand names, logos, and creative works. They are standard Unicode characters that appear in product names, websites, legal documents, marketing materials, and social media profiles worldwide.

Unlike superscript formatted text, these symbols are single Unicode characters that reliably display at the correct superscript position in all fonts, platforms, and rendering environments. This makes them significantly more portable than HTML tagged equivalents — they work in plain text emails, social media bios, product labels, and mobile apps without any formatting overhead.
